A senior SSPDF officer was reportedly killed by armed youth in Mayom County, Unity State, authorities said.

Maj. Sacristan Zoal, x-Joknyang Declaration Spokesperson, told The City Review on Friday that the officer identified as Brig. Gen. Manywir Malual was killed on Thursday evening in Madier cattle camp, south-west of Mayom County.

He said Malual was sent by Maj. Gen. Tito Biel, the Fourth Infantry’s Brigade 11 commander, to Madier village to preach peace message to the armed youth in the cattle camps so that they can refrain from going to raid cattle in Warrap State.

“Manywir was sent by Maj. Gen. Tito Biel to go to the armed youth there to advise them to stop going to Warrap State to attack locals because all the states are now readying for the upcoming elections,” Maj. Zoal said.

Maj. Zoal narrated that when they arrived at the cattle camp, Malual advised the armed youth to stop firing shots, saying that the locals could get scared and start fleeing the area.

“Of course, when they arrived at the cattle camp, Manywir went to the armed youth and told them to stop what they were doing because the residents may run away thinking there is an attack,” he said.

He stressed that the armed youth almost clashed with the soldiers, and that is when Malual pleaded with them that they stopped firing up shots and that they were calmed.

Zoal said after the armed youth ceased, Malual ordered the soldiers to go back to where they were sitting and remained with only three soldiers because the cattle camp was for his sub-clan and did not want to be blamed for initiating the fight since he solely went there to urge the youth to stop going to raid cattle in the neighbouring communities.

He noted that after Malual remained at the cattle camp when the soldiers left, the armed youth killed him.

“Immediately after the soldiers left, the armed youth killed Brig. Gen. Manywir. I do not know whether they clashed after the soldiers left. And when the soldiers went to the camp, the youth were not found in the camp,” he stressed.

Maj. Zoal further stated that Maj. Gen. Tito Biel went to Madier on Friday to investigate what exactly happened.
