Spain fires Luis Enrique days after Morocco’s World Cup defeat

Spain have announced a new manager, less than an hour after former boss Luis Enrique.

Luis de la Fuente, who used to coach the Spanish Under 21 boss will take over as Enrique’s replacement.

Enrique was fired following Tuesday’s defeat by Senegal in the round of 16 matches of the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Enrique has been in charge of Spain for the last decade but the appointment of Fuente is seen as a move to see through a new era of players.

“The RFEF has chosen Luis de la Fuente as the new absolute national coach,” read a statement from the Royal Spanish Football.

Enrique was fired Thursday via a social media post.

“The sports management of the RFEF has transferred to the president a report in which it is determined that a new project should start for the Spanish Soccer Team, with the aim of continuing with the growth achieved in recent years thanks to the work carried out by Luis Enrique and their collaborators.

“Both the president, Luis Rubiales, and the sports director, Jose Francisco Molina, have transmitted the decision to the coach,” read the statement posted on the federation’s social media.
