President Salva Kiir fired his long-saving Inspector General of Police, Majak Akec, in his latest change in the country’s law enforcement department.

A decree read by the state-run South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC) stated that President Kiir had relieved Gen. Majak and appointed the Director-General of the Directorate of Civil Registry, Nationality, Passport, and Immigration, Lt. Gen. Atem Marol Biar, as the replacement.

The reasons for the changes were not mentioned in the statement. However, the change came a few days after the heavy deployment of security personnel in Juba, which created fear in the city.

The police termed it routine. Gen. Akec was appointed in 2018 as the country’s Inspector General of Police, replacing Saeed Chawul Lom.

He is believed to be a long-serving police inspector who has engaged in training and capacity building across various directorates of police.

Akec served in many areas, including the directorate of nationality, passports, and immigration.

He prioritised training as a means of producing qualified and quality police forces capable of handling crimes and other related matters in the country.

The IGP managed to train and graduate three batches, namely Batch Five, Batch Twenty, and Batch Twenty-one. All these batches were both non-commissioned officers (NCOs) and officers of other ranks.
