UNMISS mulls return to Tombura after meeting with Futuyo

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) South Sector Commander Brig. Gen. Dhananjay Joshi and Western Equatoria State Governor Gen. Alfred Futuyo Karaba met on Wednesday and discussed the possible return of aid agencies to Tombura County.

The discussions came after Brig Gen. Joshi and his delegation from Juba visited Tombura County on Wednesday to assess the security situations in the area.

According to the governor’s Press Secretary Alex Didi, the discussions centred on how UNMISS and the state government could return the humanitarian organisations to the area.

“The UNMISS delegation after visiting Tombura County earlier this morning…met with the governor and according to the UNMISS South Sector commander, there was much improvement in terms of the security situation,” Mr Didi told to The City Review.

According to the statement, Joshi said, “I have seen peace in the area and I have seen the worrying parties have accepted to dialogue among themselves, I think for me that is a great step and it is important to make necessary arrangements for the humanitarian organisations to go back to the area.”

Didi also revealed that Gen. James Nando and leader of the armed youth Angelo Davide who had been the key worrying groups were ready to forgive each other.

Mr Didi said the UNMISS had reiterated their continuous support to the peace process in the county as well as the whole country.

He added that Brig Gen. Joshi had promised to do what he can do to return all the humanitarian organisations who were relocated from Tomura County due to the conflict

“They also assured the governor to rehabilitate the road from Yambio to Tombura for the easy movement of humanitarian organizations to the area.”

Governor Futuyo hailed UNMISS for their continued support and engagement for the peace in the state.

Governor Futuyo urged the UNMISS to help in engaging the top leaders to graduate from the Unified Forces.

 “Even if those forces are taken to the training side, if they are not graduated and put under one command still those soldiers will escape from the training centre and come back to cause in insecurity in the state so I am saying it is important if they are graduated.” Governor Futuyo reiterated his commitment to pushing for lasting peace in the state saying they were ready to relocate all the force from Tombura and other areas to the Maridi training centre.
