The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) in the Upper Nile region has finally set President Salva Kiir’s endorsement rally for May 2024 after lengthy period of preparation.

According to the statement obtained from the office of the governor of Unity State, Dr Joseph Manytuil, who is also the Chairperson of the High-Level Committee, the date for the big political event has already been fixed and there is no turning back.

“The SPLM Greater Upper Nile Region High Level Committee held its first meeting after the appointment of the ne deputy governors of Upper Nile and Jonglei State and Chief Administrator for GPAA to discuss endorsement rally preparation, slated to take place at the end of this month in Malakal Town,” the statement was partly read.

As chairman of the committee, tasked with organising the political rallies in the region, Manytuil briefed the members on many activities, including strategies for mobilisation among the people.

He appreciated the SPLM members from Upper Nile Region who stay in the diaspora for their unwavering support of the endorsement rally, which will formally declare Presdinent Salva Kiir Mayardit as the flag bearer and presidential candidate for the 2024 general elections.

He added that such support “reflects and demonstrates the unity of our people and the development agenda of the SPLM.”

According to the statement, the committee also listened to a report from SPLM Chairperson and Deputy Governor of Upper State, Deng Angok, on the ground preparation and renovation of Malakal Stadium, the airport and internal roads, and VIP accommodation facilities.

Manytuil also noted that there plans by the High-Level Committee to return the people of the Upper Nile region living in POCs of Juba, Bentiu, Malakal, and Bor and across the country to their homes and states.

In 2023, the members of the Upper Nile Region High-Level Committee for the endorsement of President Salva Kiir as the flagbearer in the 2024 general election postponed the rally in Malakal to early 2024.

Also in a separate month, the SPLM high-level delegation traveled to Upper Nile State’s Malakal town to assess the situation for the scheduled December SPLM rally for the endorsement of President Kiir, but later it was not conducted due to some reasons known to the party.
