Torit appeals for support to combat new HIV infections

The authorities in Eastern Equatoria State have appealed for support to curb the spread of new HIV infections among the population.

The chairperson for the HIV/AIDS Commission, Peter Nakimangole, said a lack of funding has been hindering the fight against HIV infections in the state.

Speaking at the commemoration of the international World AIDS Day in Torit on Thursday, Nakimangole said the state has 1,095 positive cases of the virus.

“Lack of funds hinders the commissions from tackling the rise of HIV infection, and a high illiteracy rate is one of the major challenges the HIV/AIDS commission is facing in the state.”

“My appeal is to seek the government’s attention and a positive response to support the commission with adequate allocation of funds and mobility, of course, our partners are not exceptional as far as support is concerned,” said Nakimangole.

He also appealed for the renewal of partners’ commitment to working alongside the commission to ensure the population is protected against new infections.

“I would like to appeal to you, partners, and the state government to renew commitment in working side by side with the commission to see that both men and women are protected from HIV infection and that all children and adults living with HIV have access to life-saving antiretroviral treatment so they can live a healthy and productive life,” he stressed.

“I would wish to see full commitment, where no baby is born with HIV.”

He pledged his commitment to ensuring knowledge about HIV/AIDS is imparted to everyone in the state.
