Three bodies of Lol River accident recovered
Three more bodies of the Lol River boat accident are yet to be recovered, almost one week after the tragic event in Aweil, Northern Bahr Ghazal State.
The latest recovery takes place for five of the eight people who perished in the accident.
The boat was carrying 20 flood victims when it capsized in the middle of the Lol River.
According to the Aweil authorities, five of the eight people were children and three women.
The victims were forced to flee their homes because of recent flooding in the locality.
State Minister of Gender and Child Welfare Kaku Lusia Alesio said that the rescue operation is being derailed by a lack of proper equipment – including enough boats to navigate through the flooded lowland.
“We only have one boat. Roads have been submerged, which means only boats can reach here,” Alesio said.
The operation was led by Governor Tong Akeen Ngor.
“Three bodies, all of them women, have been recovered,” added Alesio.
“We desperately need a response to the Gander Minister’s emergency plea for assistance for individuals who were impacted by these floods.
“Authorities did all they could, but it wasn’t enough, and to help the victims. We need to work together to lift these people out of the agony they are experiencing,” one person said.
According to her, most of the affected victims are women and children.
