South Sudan name squad for Under 20 AFCON finals.

The South Sudan Football Association has announced the tentative U-20 team for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) slated for Egypt next month.

A total of 51 players have been called up for the assignment with the majority coming from the team that sealed the country’s maiden qualification in Sudan since independence.

Nine defenders, 20 midfielders, five goalkeepers, and 15 strikers have all been named.

The team began its preparations for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on Friday of last week, a day after its head coach Charles John Gait and his assistant Deng Abukalam Bak were fired by the South Sudan Football Association (SSFA).

The Bright Stars qualified for the Egypt African Cup of Nations last year after finishing second in the CECAFA qualifications in Sudan.

They are in Group B with Uganda, Congo Brazzaville, and the Central African Republic. The competition will take place in Cairo, Egypt, from February 19 to March 11.
