Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army-In Opposition (SPLM/A-IO) will soon fill the vacant position of the late minister for water resources and irrigation left vacant following the death of Peter Manawa last June.

Manawa, who was a member of SPLM/A-IO , died in Egypt on June 19 after a short illness. His position is yet to be filled, almost three months since he passed on.

Puok Both Baluang, the director for information and public relations and the acting press secretary in the office of First Vice President, Riek Machar, said the party will ‘soon’ name a replacement.

“Of course, the position can’t remain empty. The SPLM (IO) leadership will submit the name of the replacement after the 40th prayer of the late Manawa Peter,” Puok stated.

The prayer shall be held on August 28, 2022, in Juba at Simba playground.

He said the minister for animal resources, Josephine Joseph Lagu, had been overseeing the activities of the ministry of water resources and irrigation.

On June 27, 2022, President Salva Kiir, during the burial of the late Manawa, declared a three-day national mourning.

A public memorial was conducted at Medan Simba, where government officials and the public viewed his body before he was buried in the same playground.

“We are now mourning a young man who died prematurely.” We have lost a great man. He (Manawa) has left behind a family. If you come across them, take care of them. Give them whatever they need,” said President Salva Kiir.
