Six artists among 16 arrested in a land ownership wrangle
Four members of Busy Kingdom Music (BKM) are among the 16 people arrested by police in Hai Referendum over a land dispute.
The artists arrested include Champion, King Awu, Lwal Lwal and Hero, all members of BKM as well as Raymond Major of Suak Tam Music.
They were allegedly locked up following a joint operation by Mangaten and Hai Referendum Police stations that left some members of the public nursing gunshot wounds.
According to eyewitnesses, the artists were arrested after a lady stormed the compound where they were performing in the company of heavily armed policemen who started firing discriminately.
“They [police] came in six Land Cruisers and started shooting at people,” said our source.
The piece of land is claimed by both the artist and the lady.
Some of the arrested artists were part of the benefactors of the 2017 IDP resettlement scheme by the government.
“They also arrested locals who were nearby when the event was unfolding. They also confiscated music equipment belonging to the artists,” added our source.
The City Review understands that the artists were part of internally displaced persons who were settled in the area in 2017.
