President Kiir kicks Makur, Achuil out of Central Bank, finance docket
Central Bank Governor Moses Makur Deng and Minister of Finance and Planning – Agak Achuil have been fired.
The two were kicked out of the lucrative dockets by a decree read out by President Salva Kiir on the national broadcaster -SSBC on Thursday, August 4.
Former Central Bank Governor Dier Tong Ngor has been appointed as the new finance minister while Governor Jonny Ohisa Damian took the place of Makur.
Damian who was the Central Bank’s first Deputy Governor in charge of policy and banking will hold forte in an acting capacity.
Achuil was appointed to the position late last year but the economy has struggled under his leadership with civil servants going for months without pay and uncontrolled inflation.
The changes came barely a week after the two briefed President Kiir on the state of the economy.
The country is currently grappling with hyperinflation with commodity prices now beyond reach for ordinary citizens.
