A Member of Parliament who represents Mayendit County in the National Transitional Legislative Assembly (NTLA), Anna Samuel, appealed to the governor of Unity State, Riek Biem, to restore peace and champion unity in the state.

In an exclusive interview with The City Review on Thursday, Anna called on Biem to maintain a positive mindset in bridging the inter-clan differences to ensure peaceful coexistence.

“I would like to urge our governor H.E Riek Biem to work on reuniting the people of Unity State because our people have been killing each other and targeting themselves. I know that it would not be easy but through the help of all the Unity State leaders; he can do it,” Anna said.

Anna revealed that floods, which have buried much of Unity State’s farmlands, is devastating the residents and that hunger is spreading throughout the state.

“As a member of a national parliament representing Mayendit County, I am also urging the governor to look into the matters of the flood, which is affecting the women most because women move in the water to look for food, and the flood of this year is going to be the worst, especially in greater upper Nile,” Anna said.

Anna lamented that women are confined to gathering water lilies since the flooding has made it difficult for the locals to cultivate food.

She further urged the governor to address Unity State’s security issues, citing the state’s widespread practice of clan-based killings.

“I am urging the new governor of Unity State to look into the issues of security first, because there is insecurity starting from Panyijiar county and Mayom county, and also our neighbours in Warrap and Lake states, and also within the counties in the state,” she stressed.

She added, “The governor should look into it because the citizens of unity state, require health education, and security.”
