Man injured in Torit inter-communal clashes

At least one person was injured in the inter-communal clashes in Torit County on Tuesday.

A 30-year-old man who hails from Hiyala is now receiving treatment at a healthcare centre in the area.

According to the local authorities, the incident happened after a suspected youth group from Haforieri stormed the area and clashed with their colleagues from Hiyala.

Speaking to The City Review in a telephone interview, the paramount chief of Hiyala payam, Galileo Ohide, confirmed the incident, saying the youth were ambushed on their way for a revenge attack.

“Six youth from Haforieri were going for revenge for what had happened on January 20, when two people were killed from Haforieri in the process of raiding goats in Hiyala,” he said.

He called on the government for quickly intervene by conducting peace dialogue among the communities

“My message to my people in Hiyala here is that at least let us refrain from killing because it has no use to kill ourselves,” Ohide said.

He said 21 lives had already been lost in the cycle of revenge attacks between the two communities since last year.

Jacob Atari Albano, the commissioner of Torit County, said he did not have any information about the recent attack.

“Up to now, I did not get any clear information regarding the incident, but the issue of Hiyala and Haforieri is well-known, and they are there being very stubborn and doing revenge killing.”

Many attempts to reach the Haforieri youth for comment were futile.
