Lets celebrate in Juba, Pres Kiir extends invite to triumphant basketball team

President Salva Kiir will personally “receive” the triumphant national basketball team in Juba, state house has said.

While congratulating the team for their exemplary performance at the FIBA World Cup 2023 Africa Qualifiers, in Kigali last week, Kiir said urged the team to continue working hard.  

“Your performance have uplifted the spirit of South Sudan across the globe and the entire nation stands behind you. Keep on working hard to achieve greater heights in the next qualifying rounds in August.

I wish you all well and look forward to receiving you in Juba to celebrate your success together.”

At the same time, South Sudan prominent politician Dr. Lam Akol said the nation can learn a lot from the team’s performance adding that team should be honoured during the Independence Day.

The opposition politician added the sport unified South Sudanese in a single weekend than ever before.

“In a span of 48 hours, our national basketball team did wonders and made us proud. You achieved in a span of hours what we, the politicians, couldn’t do in 11 years,” National Democratic Movement (NDM) member said on Twitter.

South Sudan who are still unbeaten after two rounds (Dakar and Kigali) beat Rwanda, Tunisia, and Cameroon at the third round.

They will play Cameroon, Egypt and Senegal in the fourth round.
