Jonglei residents slate mayor for renaming streets without consulting

Residents in Jonglei State criticized the mayor of Bor Municipal Council for making a unilateral decision to rename streets in the town.

This is after Mr John Achiek issued provisional order No. 15/2024 over the weekend, renaming the road from Pakwau Highway to Dr. James Alic Garang Road, in honour of the serving governor of the Bank of South Sudan.

The mayor also renamed the Machuor Highway connecting to Malual-chaat as H. H.E. Denay Jock Chagor Road, in honour of the area governor, Denay Chagor.

In an interview with The City Review, James Mawut argued that there are many heroes worth being considered for honours in renaming the streets ahead of the duo.

“It was unfortunate when I saw the order, but I think it is a one-man decision. Look, we have many heroes, such as Dr. John Garang and Abel Alier; these are the people we should rename stress.” Mawut said
He called on the mayor to rescind his orders, terming them disrespectful to liberators, including the sitting, President Salva Kiir Mayardit.

“We should have named streets such as Salva Kiir Street because we start with their junior, and with the last impact, it will sound disrespectful to liberators,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mabior Emmanuel claimed that such renaming without proper process showed a lack of consultation from the current mayor.

He added that it was not the decision of the municipal council, but the decision of the mayor to rename the streets.

Mabior urged the mayor to revoke the orders and sit down with the council to decide on the proper naming of the town streets.
