International athletes reign in Juba’s Athletics Republic Championship
South Sudanese international athletes Lucia William, Thiel Deng Thiel, and William Yach Majok registered stellar performances in the Greater Bahr el Ghazal at the second edition of the Juba Athletics Republican Championship.
Although the official results were not immediately released, the top three athletes were placed among the best local runners, whom they outperformed.
Lucia, Thiel, and Yach all finished first in their respective races.
The event also saw the home-based players from the famous Bahr el Ghazal turn up with remarkable performances, giving them the lead on the first competition day.
The tournament began with 100 metres, 200 metres, 400 metres, 800 metres, and 1500 metres, with Wau, Aweil, and Rumbek athletes dominating the top three races in both male and female races.
The President of South Sudan Athletics Federation (SSAF), Majok Ayii, praised the participants’ efforts in the event.
He encouraged the athletes to take competition seriously in order to improve their results as well as their individual records.
“It is impressive to see our athletes continue to shine in such home-organized tournaments, but what is important is that we need to see changes in your performance that will take each individual to the next level,” she said.
He also announced that there will be individual awards and prizes for champions who win first place and create new records during the two-day competition in Juba.
The ceremony will continue into the evening with speeches from prominent government officials.
