Garbage collection gobbles SSP7 M, per day from Juba City Council account
The Mayor of Juba City Council, Michael Allah-Jabu, has lamented the high cost of garbage collection, saying that his administration spends not less than SSP7 million daily on the exercise.
The mayor said despite the commitment from his administration to address the garbage menace in residential areas and markets, the exercise is becoming unsustainable and is currently the most expensive service in Juba City.
“This activity is costing us a lot of money that we have to pay in a day that is not less than SSP7 million,” he lamented.
He added, “cleaning of garbage has become an issue all over the world, and has become one of the costliest financial services.”
The mayor made the remark while addressing the media yesterday during the launch of the Juba Clean City Project 2022–2026.
Since beginning the exercise last year, Allah-Jabu said the garbage collection had extended to market areas such as Konyokonyo and Custom.
The mayor defended his administration from accusations of laxity, especially from members of the public who have raised concerns over piles of garbage that clutter the city.
For the mayor, the council has tried within its strength, and it will soon introduce a door-to-door collection of garbage fees to address the financial challenges.
“We are now initiating the collection of garbage money from door to door,” he said.
According to Allah-Jabu, households produce a larger volume of garbage, but their payments are yet to be fully tapped.
He said the money collected is not enough to fund its campaign to clean the city.
“We are to ensure that all garbage that has accumulated in the streams in the market are all taken I just need patient from our people,” he said.
“People blame the city council but they do not know that other cities in the world are supported by the national government; they are given a huge sum of money to help them with cleaning.”
