Around four people are feared to have died and six others injured in Jonglei State after two boats collided at Nyang, Bor County, on Saturday.

A commercial boat was carrying humanitarian assistance belonging to the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations when it collided with another boat on the River Nile.

It was travelling from Bor to Panyangor, Twic East County, Jonglei state.

Elijah Thonbor Abraham, Deputy Secretary of Jonglei State Boat Union, said the two boats collided and capsized at Nyang the Southern part of Bor County.

“The incident happened yesterday (Saturday) evening at a place called Nyang at around 7 pm; one boat was coming to Bor while the other boat was going to Panyangor, and they clashed at the certain corner where they mismatched,” said Abraham.

Abraham said the boat was carrying humanitarian assistance with more than 50 passengers.

“Three people drowned with the boat and their bodies are not yet to be found. One person died on the spot and the body is now at the state hospital. Six people sustained injuries and they are now receiving treatment at Bor State hospital,” Abraham said.

He urged boat captains to be careful when sailing on River Nile.
