Nyirol County’s director of education has been fired because of the low enrollment of students sitting for this year’s primary eight national examination.

The county is understood to have registered a paltry nine candidates for the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE), set to kick off on February 14.

The exams will run until February 17.

The low registration led to the dismissal of Ter Muon Jock.

“The ministry of general education is terminating your duty as the acting county education director of Nyirol,” Ruot Yuol Nyuon, Jonglei State Director General – Ministry of Education, said in a letter seen by City Review Digital.

Jock was appointed to the position last October, in an acting capacity.

Jock, however, defended his performance, adding that the low registration was a result of factors beyond his control.

“I was appointed acting county education director on October 21, 2022, which was a third term. The decision to dismiss me came from the state level because of the low turnout of candidates,” Jock stated.

Jock attributed the low enrollment to the ongoing conflict and flooding that has displaced thousands of people across the state.

“I don’t blame the schools for low registration because most of the parents have fled to neighbouring countries in search of a better life and schools for their children.

“This is a challenge facing the schools,” he added.
