Charles Okello: Bodyguard shoots minister dead, kills self

Brother to slain Uganda’s State Minister for Labour, Employment, and Industrial Relations, Sam Engola, has confirmed that his younger brother, Col. Charles Okello Engola, was shot dead this morning.

Okello was allegedly killed by his own bodyguard at his home in Kyanja, a Kampala suburb.

Police spokesperson Fred said, “We don’t want to speculate on the motive,” adding that an investigation has since been launched to find out the reason that might have triggered Okello’s bodyguard to shoot his boss before taking his own life.

“The shooting was done by one of his bodyguards at his residence in Kyanja, who allegedly fired several shots at close range and he fled from the scene upto the trading center at Kyanja Ring Road, where he entered a saloon and also shot himself dead.” Adds Enanga.

According to eyewitnesses, the bodyguard was heard shouting “salary, salary” as he fled.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police, together with the Director of CID, have all responded to this tragic incident.

Okello is a retired colonel in the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF).

He died aged 65.
