The South Sudan National Bureau of Standards has started issuing quality marks and product certifications to the agro-processing companies in the country, said an official.

“Currently, we have the product certification in place. We have already started the quality marks and we have already certified agro-processing companies in terms of honey,” said Dr. Kuorwel Kuai, the Chairperson of the South Sudan National Bureau of Standards.

He said his office would ensure all the agro-processed products meet the required standards for consumption.

“We have already given them (agro-processing companies) the quality marks that are the passport for a particular product to go to the market and also for this particular product to go to other regional or international markets,” Kuorwel said.

He added, “This is the last point you attest to the world that your products are safe and if you have not yet put your system in place, then you cannot rush to that system.”

According to Kuorwel, all the private sectors manufacturing different products in the country can now apply for the quality marks to be put on their products.

Also, he said his office has a harmonization system for quality marks to ensure that all the products imported into the country are certified by that particular country.

“We, as part of the East African Community, have a system that we call harmonisation of the standards, quality mark processes so that we all have uniform standards being applied across the East Africa region.”

“We ensure that all the products that are being imported into the Republic of South Sudan are certified by our counterparts. We will not be allowing products that have not been certified by the bureau of standard from our partner states,” Kuorwel added.

In South Sudan, quality assurance and inspection are applied for the promotion of quality standards, conformity and inspection services in the South Sudan National Bureau of Standards. This is done across governmental, private sector and non-governmental organizations and the core function is entirely inspection of goods to ensure they are fit for consumption and use.
