The South Sudan Basketball Federation is expected to elect a new executive body on February 19, 2024.

In his order, Geng also instructed the electoral committee to follow the ministerial instruction dated November 27, 2023, as well as Article 40(b) of the Transitional Constitution of South Sudan 2011, as amended, and the SSBF regulations 2019, which require elections to be held within 60 days.

The electoral committee is led by Bak Athian Bak, a returning officer; Gen. Shengiti Both Diu, Secretary; Abdhallah Abu Delesuk, legal officer; William Kolong Pioth, administration and finance; and Ms. Apuk Ayuel Mayen, public relations officer.

The committed is tasked with upholding the ideals of independence, impartiality, professionalism, and integrity while performing their duties on the electoral committee.

“The terms of reference of the electoral committee is to develop procedural guidelines to govern elections, such as guidelines that shall conform to the basketball constitution and FIBA regulations; received duly filed applications from the applicants contesting for the various elective positions of like President of SSBF, Secretary General; and Secretary for Finance,” the statement read in part.

“Publish the final list of qualified candidates for the elective position; facilitate the logistics of delegates for elections; conduct elections and announce the results; submit a financial and narrative report two weeks after the conclusion of elections; and perform any function that may be assigned by the Minister.”

The order also includes certain other matters that the electoral committee will address and carry out once they assume their duties.

“Miscellaneous matters; the election date for the South Sudan Basketball Federation shall be the 19th day of February 2024; the committee shall cease to exist upon the conclusion of elections for which it was formed by the minister; the electoral committee shall work closely with youth and sports council which is mandated to supervised elections of all youth and sports associations, bodies and entities in South Sudan,” it further stated.

On November 27, 2023, the Minister of Youth and Sports Dr. Joseph Geng directed the South Sudan Basketball Federation and the national commission to carry out registration of the bodies till February 28, 2024, to hold an election or risk being suspended by the FIBA.

The instruction came in response to the suspension of the SSBF President, Mr. Luol Deng, by the General Assembly of the South Sudan Basketball Federation for failing to respond to an invitation to attend a meeting as his four-year term elapsed.
