The mother whose children died of suspected food poisoning in Akobo County, Jonglei State also died.

Puok Nyang, Akobo County Commissioner, told The City Review on Thursday that Nyekur Gatchuk died at the county’s main clinic on Wednesday following a battle with complications of poisoning from food.

“I was told that she passed away yesterday [Wednesday] in the afternoon at around 1 p.m. from the hospital. I think her condition was exacerbated by the death of her children which could also led to her death” Nyang stated.

He added, “The poison was so effective that six other family members including her were rushed to the hospital.”

According to him, four family members are still under treatment while one patient has been discharged by the doctors.

On May 6, 2024, four children reportedly died after eating contaminated food and six other family members were admitted to the main clinic in Akobo.

Nyang noted that the incident occurred in Burewil village on Monday night when the children were sleeping.

“The children died last night on Monday while sleeping. It was in the middle of the night when their mother and grandmother heard them crying in their house and they ran to them and upon their arrival in the house the mother and the grandmother fainted too,” Nyang stated.

He also said the deceased were three brothers and a sister, and that it was unclear what killed them although they suspect that they may have drunk either contaminated water or eaten poisoned food.
