​Majok Mayor accused of selling Dura meant for citizens

The Mayor of Majok Municipality Reec Mateem Akol has been released on bail after spending two days in police custody.

The major, his deputy- Wieu Deng Kuol, an official from the ministry of finance, were all arrested for allegedly selling dura meant to caution citizens from higher food prices.

“Town mayor of Majok Municipality was arrested along with his deputy after they sold a quantity of Dura to one trader,” Aweil Police spokesperson, Guot Guot Akol told City Review.

Other people arrested were Yai D​​eng Kooc, an official from the ministry of finance, a member of Dura distribution committee and Agany Thiel Agany, the trader who allegedly bought dura.

They were apprehended on July 22 but were later released on bail, two days later.

The six were accused of selling 50 sacks of the dura. Police also found the suspect in possession of 1,964,850 SSP at the time of their arrest.

The Dura was brought by the state government to help the local population buy food at affordable prices.

Police said that some ‘rogue’ government officials used the opportunity to sell the dura to local traders at the expense of the citizens.
